School Based Prevention Services

School Based Prevention Services are prevention-oriented programs that promote emotional health, pro-social behavior, and conflict mediation for children in Oakland public schools and Head Start centers.

Oakland Comprehensive Gang Model

Oakland Unified School District, Office of Alternative Education leads the Oakland Comprehensive Gang Model with support from California Youth Outreach and Project Re-Connect.  Fifty (50) gang involved youth are provided with case management and Gang Re-direct classes at five of Oakland’s toughest alternative schools.  Sixty (60) parents of high risk children are provided with a 6 week parenting class series that includes gang awareness and positive parenting.

OUR KIDS Middle School Model

Alameda County Health Care Services Agency operates the OUR KIDS program, to increase the number of students receiving school-based behavioral health services in up to twelve Oakland public middle schools. With the goal of reducing school-related violence and increasing pro-social behaviors of youth, the OUR KIDS program provides 520 high-risk students with psycho-social assessments, counseling, case management, referral and follow-up, and family support services.

OUSD Second Step Violence Prevention

The Oakland Unified School District implements Second Step Violence Prevention Curriculum in 37 OUSD elementary schools, 29 OUSD preschool sites, 17 City of Oakland Head Start programs and 6 Family Child Care Centers. 2,160 preschool students (including Head Start and FCCs) and 9,440 elementary school students receive Second Step lessons focusing on empathy, impulse control/problem-solving, and emotion/anger management.  Second Step parent educators also provide at least 35 parent workshops for the 2009-2010 school year.  OUSD also implements the Peer Conflict Mediation program in Oakland middle schools.
